Betula Pendula
Birch Bark / Betula Pendula / Dried Organic Birch Bark / Birch Bark Tea
ORIGIN OF BULGARIA
Botanical Name: Betula Pendula
Common Names: White Birch, Canoe Birch, Paper Birch, Silver birch, Warty birch
Betula pendula is a species of tree in the family Betulaceae, native to Europe and parts of Asia, though in southern Europe, it is only found at higher altitudes. Birch bark is the protective outer covering of the trunk, branches, and twigs of the birch tree. It is known for its distinctive appearance, featuring a smooth, papery texture and often a white or light-colored surface with characteristic horizontal lines or lenticels. The color of birch bark can vary among different species, ranging from white to shades of brown.
Usage: Bring water to a boil in a pot. Add the birch bark pieces to the boiling water. Reduce the heat and let the tea simmer for about 10-15 minutes. After simmering, strain the tea to remove the birch bark pieces.
Traditional Use
In European folk tradition, birch is the classic spring herb, used in seasonal cleansing teas. It is traditionally used:
- To support the kidneys and urinary system and the body's natural elimination of fluids
- To support comfortable joints and easy movement
- As a general tonic for energy and vitality, especially after winter
- Cooled, as a refreshing rinse for the skin and hair
Harvest & Character
Dried bark of the silver birch (Betula pendula), with a mild, woody, slightly bitter taste. Birch tea is naturally acidic; traditionally a small pinch of baking soda is added to soften it.
