Brassica Nigra

Black Mustard Seeds / Brassica Nigra / Organic Whole Dried Black Mustard Seeds / Black Mustard Tea / Dried Seeds / Herbal Tea

ORIGIN OF BULGARIA
Botanical Name: Brassica Nigra
Other Names: Brassica nigra seeds, Sarson

Black mustard seeds, scientifically known as Brassica nigra, are small, round seeds with a dark brown or black color. They are commonly used in cooking for their strong, pungent flavor and aroma. They have a sharp, spicy, and slightly bitter taste. They are often used in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cuisines. They're a key ingredient in pickles, curries, and spice blends. They're also used for tempering dishes, where they are briefly cooked in oil to release their flavor.

Usage: Lightly toast the dried black mustard seeds in a dry pan over medium heat for a few minutes until they become aromatic. This step enhances the flavor but is optional. Bring 1 cup of water to a boil. Add the 1-2 teaspoons dried black mustard seeds to the boiling water. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes. Strain.
(The tea will have a strong, spicy, and somewhat bitter flavor, characteristic of black mustard seeds. Toasting the seeds can add a nutty note to the tea.)

Traditional Use

Black mustard is the hottest of the mustard seeds and a key spice of Indian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cooking. The seeds are traditionally used:

  • Tempered in hot oil to flavour curries, dals and vegetables
  • In pickles, chutneys and spice blends
  • In warming foot baths in the cold season
