Tussilago farfara, commonly known as coltsfoot, is a plant in the tribe Senecioneae in the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and parts of western and central Asia. Coltsfoot is a perennial herbaceous plant that spreads by seeds and rhizomes. Tussilago is often found in colonies of dozens of plants. The leaves of coltsfoot, which appear after the flowers have set seed, wither and die in the early summer. The leaves and flowers contain mucilage, they are used to make infusions, washes and poultices to sooth minor skin irritations. It is a plant visited by honeybees and provides pollen and nectar.
Usage: Boil 1 cup of water. While the water is heating, place 1-2 teaspoons of dried coltsfoot herb into a teapot or heatproof mug. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, pour it over the herb. Cover the teapot or mug with a lid or a small plate to trap the steam and let steep for about 5-10 minutes. Strain.
