Damask Rose Buds Petals

Bulgarian Rose Petals BULK 1 lb - 2 lbs / Damask Rose Petals / Organic Rose Petals Tea / Damascena Rose / Dried Bulk Herbs

Latin Name: Rosa x Damascena
Origin: Bulgaria
Other Names: Damascus rose petals, Fragrant rose petals, Pink rose petals, R. damascena petals, Old rose petals, Rose otto, Summer damask rose

The cultivation of the "Bulgarian rose" as Rosa × damascena has been developed since Roman times. It is cultivated for commercial use in an area in the vicinity of Kazanlak and Karlovo in Bulgaria called the "Valley of Roses". The distillate from these roses is called "Bulgarian rose oil" and "Bulgarian rose otto".

The roses are a light to moderate pink to light red. The relatively small flowers grow in groups. The bush has an informal shape.

Damask roses are used in cooking as a flavouring ingredient or spice. They are an ingredient in the spice mixture denominated ras el hanout. Rose water and powdered roses are used in Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine. Whole flowers, or petals, are also used in the herbal tea. The most popular use, however, is in the flavoring of desserts such as ice cream, jam, Turkish delights, rice pudding, yogurt, etc.

For centuries, the Damask rose has symbolized beauty and love. The fragrance of the rose has been captured and preserved in the form of rose water by a method that can be traced to ancient times in the Middle East and later to the Indian subcontinent.

-You can make your own potpourri by blending dried rose petals with complementary scents like cinnamon sticks, dried ginger, or whole vanilla beans, and put the mixture anywhere you want to freshen up.
-Just mix together one cup of Epsom salt, a handful of dried and crushed rose petals, and ¼ cup sea salt. To enhance the scent, you can also add a few drops of rose essential oil. Stir everything together and store in a cute jar. To use, pour a palm-sized amount of bath salts into a cotton muslin bag (or a clean sock in a pinch), and let the mix infuse into your bathwater. You’ll get all the aromatic benefits of the petals without clogging your tub brain with them afterward. Dried rose petals tea offers a delicate floral flavor and aroma.

Usage: Heat 1 cup water to near boiling. Place the 1-2 teaspoons dried rose petals in a teapot or a heatproof mug. Pour the hot water over the roots. Cover the teapot or mug with a lid or a small plate to trap the heat and let the tea steep for about 10 minutes. Strain.

Traditional Use

Tea made from Bulgarian rose petals has a delicate floral taste and a comforting feeling. It is traditionally used:

  • To calm the mind and help ease everyday stress
  • To support gentle, regular digestion and soothe the stomach
  • To soothe the throat in the cold season
  • By women for comfort during the monthly cycle
  • As a natural source of vitamin C and antioxidants
  • Externally, as a refreshing wash for the skin
  • To add a beautiful aroma to other herbal teas

Harvest & Character

Harvested in May and June in the Rose Valley, early in the morning between 5 and 8 a.m., when the scent is strongest. The petals are gathered by hand in baskets so they are not crushed. Damask rose (Rosa damascena) is the same rose used for the famous Bulgarian rose oil.
