Cichorium Intybus

Chicory Root BULK 1 lb - 2 lbs / Cichorium Intybus / Organic Dried Bulk Herb / CHICORY Herbal Tea / Dried Chicory Herb

Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Cichorium intybus
Common Names: Common Chicory, Blue Daisy, Blue Dandelion, Blue Sailors, Bunk, Cornflower, Hendibeh, Ragged Sailors, Succory, Wild Bachelor's Buttons, Wild Endive.

Common chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a somewhat woody, perennial herbaceous plant of the family Asteraceae, usually with bright blue flowers, rarely white or pink. Many varieties are cultivated for salad leaves, chicons (blanched buds), or roots, which are baked, ground, and used as a coffee substitute and food additive. In the 21st century, inulin, an extract from chicory root, has been used in food manufacturing as a sweetener and source of dietary fiber.
Root chicory has long been cultivated in Europe as a coffee substitute. The roots are baked, roasted, ground, and used as an additive, especially in the Mediterranean region.

Lately, brewed chicory root is becoming popular as a coffee replacement. This is because chicory and coffee taste similar to each other, but unlike coffee, chicory doesn’t contain any caffeine.

Using: Boil water in a kettle or pot. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of roasted and ground chicory root to a tea infuser or teapot. Pour the boiling water over the chicory root. Allow it to steep for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on desired strength.

Traditional Use

Chicory is a familiar blue-flowered wild plant of European roadsides and meadows. The root is traditionally used:

  • As a bitter tonic to stimulate appetite and support digestion
  • To support healthy liver and gallbladder function and the natural flow of bile
  • To support regularity and the body's natural elimination of fluids
  • To support a healthy metabolism
  • Roasted, as a caffeine-free coffee alternative

Harvest & Character

Dug in late summer and autumn, when the above-ground parts begin to wilt. The dried roots are wrinkled, light to dark brown outside and white to yellowish inside, with a strongly bitter taste. Naturally rich in inulin.
