Syzygium Aromaticum

Cloves Whole Berries / Syzygium Aromaticum / Laung - Clove Buds / Organic Whole Dried Cloves / Aromatic Cooking & Tea Spice

Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Syzygium Aromaticum
Other Names: Clove buds, Whole cloves, Cloves spice, Nelken, Gewürznelken, Clou de girofle, Clavo de olor, Chiodi di garofano, Cravo-da-índia, Kruidnagel

Cloves are the dried flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, an evergreen tree belonging to the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family. They originate from the Maluku Islands (also known as the Spice Islands) in Indonesia and have spread over time as a highly valued spice in Asian, Middle Eastern, and European cuisines. In appearance, cloves are small, dark brown, and nail-shaped. Their aroma is very intense—warm, spicy, slightly sweet, and sharp. The flavor is strong and dominant, so even a small amount can have a noticeable impact in recipes. Whole cloves release their aroma more slowly than ground cloves, which makes them especially suitable for long-cooked dishes and beverages.

In cooking, whole cloves are used in rice dishes, meat and vegetable recipes, sauces, pickles, and marinades. On the sweet side, they are commonly found in compotes, cookies, cakes, and especially in winter drinks such as spiced teas and hot beverage blends. During infusion, they are typically added to the liquid and then removed before serving. Whole cloves are also used by inserting them into orange peels for traditional decorations and in potpourri mixes, where they provide a pleasant and long-lasting fragrance.

Usage: To prepare cloves whole berries tea, bring one cup of water to a boil. Once boiling, remove it from the heat and add 2–3 whole cloves. Cover and let it steep for about 5–10 minutes. The longer it steeps, the stronger and more intense the flavor becomes. Then strain out the cloves, and the tea is ready to drink.

Cloves are one of the world's most aromatic spices and a classic warming ingredient in herbal tradition. They are traditionally used:

  • In the kitchen: cakes, cookies, mulled wine, soups, bean dishes and meat
  • As a warming tea to support digestion

  • In a cup of hot milk before bed, as a relaxing evening drink
