Echinacea purpurea is a North American species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is native to parts of eastern North America and present to some extent in the wild in much of the eastern, southeastern and midwestern United States as well as in the Canadian Province of Ontario. It is most common in the Ozarks and in the Mississippi/Ohio Valley. Its habitats include dry open woods, prairies and barrens. Echinacea purpurea is an herbaceous perennial up to 120 cm tall by 25 cm wide at maturity. The root contains various active compounds and can be used to prepare herbal tea or tinctures. Echinacea root tea has a strong, earthy, slightly bitter taste.

Usage: Add 2 tablespoons of echinacea root to 500 ml of boiling water. Let it steep for approximately 2 hours, then strain.

Traditional Use

The root is the most valued part of purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), especially rich in active compounds such as alkamides and polyphenols. It is traditionally used:

  • To support the body's natural defenses, especially in autumn and winter
  • To support the body's natural recovery during the cold season
  • As a natural source of antioxidants such as cichoric and rosmarinic acid
  • As a soothing mouth rinse for the gums
  • To prepare teas and homemade tinctures
