Elderberry Berries / Sambucus Nigra / Whole Elderberries / Organic Dried Elder Berries / Black Elder
Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Sambucus Nigra
Other Names: Elder, Elderberry, Black Elder, European Elder, European Elderberry, European Black Elderberry
Sambucus nigra is a species complex of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae native to most of Europe. It grows in a variety of conditions including both wet and dry fertile soils, primarily in sunny locations. The plant is widely grown as an ornamental shrub or small tree. The fruit is a glossy, dark purple to black berry 3–5 mm diameter, produced in drooping clusters in late autumn. Elderberries have a unique flavor that is tart and slightly sweet. Some describe the taste as similar to blackberries but with a more tangy and floral undertone. Dried elderberry berries can be used in a variety of culinary creations, including teas, syrups, jams, baked goods, and savory dishes.
Usage: Heat 1 cup water in a kettle or saucepan until it reaches near boiling. Place the 1-2 teaspoons dried elderberry berries in a teapot, heatproof mug, or tea infuser. Pour the hot water over the dried berries. Cover the teapot or mug with a lid or a small plate to trap the heat, and let the tea steep for about 10-15 minutes. Strain.
Traditional Use
Elderberry is one of Europe's most treasured traditional berries for the cold season. It is traditionally used:
- To support the body's natural defenses, especially in autumn and winter
- As a rich natural source of anthocyanin antioxidants
- As a general tonic for vitality and wellbeing
- To support regularity and the body's natural elimination of fluids
- Cooked into homemade syrups, jams and teas
