Chenopodium Ambrosioides

Epazote Herb / Chenopodium Ambrosioides / Mexican Tea / Herbal Remedy / Semi Contra / Herbal Tea

ORIGIN OF BULGARIA
Botanical Name: Chenopodium Ambrosioides
Other Names: Mexican Tea, Wormseed, Jesuit's Tea, Jesuit, Erva Formigueira, Semi Contra, Pazote

Epazote (Mexican Tea) is a popular Mexican aromatic herb known for its distinctive flavor and fragrance. It is widely grown throughout Latin America, especially in Mexico and the Caribbean, and is used both in cooking and as an herbal tea.

Epazote has a unique and exotic taste that is difficult to compare to other herbs. When fresh, it has a resinous aroma and flavor reminiscent of oregano, anise, fennel, or tarragon, but with a much stronger and more intense character. Its aroma diminishes with heat, so it is best added toward the end of the cooking process.

Usage:
In Cooking:
Add ½ to 1 teaspoon of Epazote to dishes approximately 10 minutes before the end of cooking. It is especially popular in bean dishes, soups, stews, and traditional Mexican recipes.
As Herbal Tea:
1 tablespoon of dried Epazote
1 liter of boiling water
Pour the boiling water over the herb and let it steep for 3–5 minutes. Strain before drinking.

Traditional Use

Epazote is a pungent herb of Mexican cuisine and folk tradition. It is traditionally used:

  • In the kitchen: an essential herb for black and white beans, chili, enchiladas, soups and vegetable stews; add a little in the last 10 minutes of cooking
  • Cooked with beans to make them easier to digest and reduce gas
  • In seasonal cleansing routines, to support a healthy gut environment
