Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Gentiana Lutea
Common Names: Yellow and pale gentian, Bitter root, Feltwort, Bitterwort, Stemless gentian, Great yellow gentian, Simply yellow gentian
Gentiana lutea, commonly known as the great yellow gentian or simply yellow gentian, is a species of flowering plant in the family Gentianaceae. It is native to the mountainous regions of central and southern Europe. The plant typically grows in alpine meadows and grasslands at elevations ranging from 300 to 2,500 meters (1,000 to 8,200 feet) above sea level. The yellow gentian is a perennial herbaceous plant with large, lance-shaped leaves arranged in a basal rosette. Its flowers are bright yellow, trumpet-shaped, and appear in dense clusters at the top of tall stems. The plant blooms from late summer to early autumn.
Usage: Boil 1 cup water. Place 1 teaspoon dried gentian root in a teapot, tea infuser, or directly into your cup. Once the water has reached a boil, pour it over roots. Allow the root to steep in the hot water for about 5-10 minutes. Strain.
Traditional Use
Yellow gentian is one of the most bitter plants in nature and the classic bitter herb of European tradition, still used in traditional aperitifs and bitters. The root is traditionally used:
- Before meals, to stimulate appetite and support digestion
- To support the natural production of digestive juices and bile
- To ease bloating and the feeling of heaviness after meals
- As a tonic for strength and vitality
- In homemade bitters and tinctures
Harvest & Character
Dug from the thick, fleshy rhizomes of older plants in late summer and autumn. Wrinkled, yellow-brown root pieces with an intensely bitter taste; a very small amount is enough.
