Crataegus monogyna, known as common hawthorn, one-seed hawthorn, or single-seeded hawthorn, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family Rosaceae. It is native to Europe, northwestern Africa, and West Asia, but has been introduced in many other parts of the world. The hawthorn is a shrub or small tree up to about 10 metres (33 feet) tall, with a dense crown. The plant blooms in May which grows in small white, pink or red clusters. Flowers give way to small berries called haws which becomes red when ripe. Hawthorn berries are small, round, and typically red, although some varieties may produce black berries. The berries are about the size of a pea and grow in clusters.
Usage: Boil 1 cup of water. Place 1-2 teaspoons of dried hawthorn berries into a teapot or a heat-resistant container. Pour the boiling water over the hawthorn berries. Cover the container and let the hawthorn berries steep in the hot water for about 10-15 minutes. After steeping, strain the tea to remove the hawthorn berries.
