Crataegus monogyna, known as common hawthorn, one-seed hawthorn, or single-seeded hawthorn, is a species of flowering plant in the rose family Rosaceae. It is native to Europe, northwestern Africa, and West Asia, but has been introduced in many other parts of the world. The hawthorn is a shrub or small tree up to about 10 metres (33 feet) tall, with a dense crown. The plant blooms in May which grows in small white, pink or red clusters. Flowers give way to small berries called haws which becomes red when ripe. In China, dried leaves are used as a substitute for tea.
Using: To make hawthorn tea, simply add 1-2 teaspoons of dried hawthorn leaves to a pot of boiling water and steep for 5-10 minutes.
Traditional Use
Hawthorn is a thorny, white-flowered hedgerow shrub and one of the most valued heart herbs of European tradition. The flowering tops are traditionally used:
- To support a healthy heart and circulation
- To support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels already within the normal range
- As a calming tea, to help ease everyday stress and nervous tension
- In the evening, to support relaxation and restful sleep
- Often blended with lemon balm and motherwort
