Corylus Avellana

Hazel Bark / Corylus Avellana / Organic Dried Bulk Herb / HAZEL Bark

Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Corylus Avellana
Common Names: Common Hazel, European Hazel, European Filbert, Cobnut, Filbert nut

Corylus avellana, the common hazel, is a species of flowering plant in the birch family Betulaceae, native to Europe and Western Asia. It is an important component of the hedgerows that were, historically, used as property and field boundaries in lowland England. Common hazel is mainly cultivated for its nuts. Common hazel is typically a shrub reaching 3–8 metres (10–26 feet) tall, but can reach 15 m (49 ft).
The bark on young hazel trees and shrubs is smooth and a light brown or light gray color. An identifying feature of hazel bark is the yellowish-green lenticels or pores visible around the trunk. As the hazel tree matures, the bark develops deep fissures giving it a rough, scaly appearance.

Using: Add 1 tablespoon of finely chopped dried herbs to 1 glass of boiling water. Brew for 5 minutes. Strain.

Traditional Use

Common hazel, the tree that gives us hazelnuts, has a long history in Balkan and Eastern European folk herbalism. The bark is traditionally used:

  • To support healthy veins and capillaries and comfortable, light-feeling legs
  • To support the kidneys and urinary system
  • Externally, in compresses for the skin

Harvest & Character

Dried bark of Corylus avellana, cut into small pieces, with a gently astringent taste.
