Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Humulus Lupulus
Other Names: Common hop, Beer hop, Hop vine, European hop, Hop bine, Hop plant, Hop cone, Brewer's gold
Hops are the flowers (also called seed cones or strobiles) of the hop plant Humulus lupulus, a member of the Cannabaceae family of flowering plants. They are used primarily as a bittering, flavouring, and stability agent in beer, to which, in addition to bitterness, they impart floral, fruity, or citrus flavours and aromas. Many different varieties of hops are grown by farmers around the world, with different types used for particular styles of beer.
Flavours and aromas are described appreciatively using terms which include "grassy", "floral", "citrus", "spicy", "piney", "lemony", "grapefruit", and "earthy".
In addition to beer, hops are used in herbal teas and in soft drinks. Hops can be eaten; the young shoots of the vine are edible and can be cooked like asparagus.
Usage:
Add a pinch of hops to a cup of boiling water and let it brew for fifteen minutes. It should be kept covered during brewing. When the time is up, the tea can be drained and consumed. A few drops of lemon can be added to make it easier to drink.
Traditional Use
Hops are best known for flavouring beer, but they are also one of the classic calming herbs of European tradition. The cones are traditionally used:
- As an evening tea, to support relaxation and restful sleep
- To help ease everyday stress and nervous tension
- By women to support balance during menopause
- As a bitter, to stimulate appetite and support digestion
- In herbal sleep pillows
- As a hair rinse, to support strong, healthy hair
