ORIGIN OF BULGARIA
Botanical Name: Cetraria Islandica
Other Names: Iceland Lichen, True Iceland Lichen, Island Cetraria Lichen
Iceland Moss is not a true moss but a lichen — a composite organism made up of a fungus and an alga growing together. It belongs to the lichen family Parmeliaceae. Despite its common name, it is more accurately called Iceland Lichen. The taste of Iceland Moss tea is generally described as distinctly bitter. Alongside this, it has a slightly earthy, herbal character.
Usage: Add 1 tablespoon to 250 ml water and boil for 5 minutes. Strain.
Traditional Use
Iceland moss is not a moss but a lichen of northern and mountain regions, rich in soothing natural mucilage. It is traditionally used:
- To soothe the throat and voice
- To support the respiratory system in the cold season
- To stimulate appetite and support digestion
- As a tonic for strength and recovery
Harvest & Character
Harvested in summer, the whole plant is collected and cleaned. Curly, branched, olive-brown to grey pieces with a bitter taste that become jelly-like when simmered. Keep dry: it absorbs moisture easily.
Please note: Not for people with autoimmune conditions. Not for pregnancy or breastfeeding.
