Cymbopogon Citratus

Lemongrass | Cymbopogon Citratus | Lemongrass Tea | Lemon Grass Dried Loose Leaves

Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Cymbopogon citratus
Common Names: Citronella grass, Barbed wire grass, Cochin grass, Malabar grass, Fever grass, Oily grass, Silk heads, Gandhatrana, Hari-chaha, Bhutrin

The name cymbopogon derives from the Greek words kymbe and pogon "which mean in most species, the hairy spikelets project from boat-shaped spathes." Lemongrass and its oil are believed to possess therapeutic properties.
With its lemon scent and light rose aroma, lemongrass is an indispensable ingredient in Thai and Indonesian dishes. Lemongrass grows wild in Indonesia, Indochina, and tropical Australia, and has been cultivated as a culinary herb in Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka, and as a useful herb in India for thousands of years. It was thought to be Paracelsus' favorite and most revered plant. Dried lemongrass adds light citrus notes to herbal tea blends, body care creations, culinary dishes and can be brewed as lemongrass tea. It's also popular in aromatherapy.

Pleasant, lemony aroma with delicate rose notes. The taste is rather neutral, but it retains its lemony aromas.

It is used to flavor mint tea. Try it to flavor broths and soups. Because the dried leaves are relatively hard and you may not like the finished food, you can, if necessary, put the lemongrass in a bag and remove it at the end of cooking or strain the sauce or even extract it in hot water and use only liquid. In the Philippine province of Cebu, lemongrass is a key flavoring in lechón, a national dish that consists of a whole roasted pig. In Indonesia, where the herb is known as "series," lemongrass is used to season roasted chicken.

Lemongrass tea boasts a unique lemony flavor without the tart bite. The tea is naturally caffeine-free and can be enjoyed all day without adverse side effects for sleep.

Using:
Pour 1-2 teaspoons of lemongrass into boiling water and infuse for 5-8 minutes. Lemongrass tea can be consumed as a hot tea or an iced tea. Either way, the tea should be brewed using boiling water. For iced tea, simply let the mixture cool to room temperature before serving with ice or storing in the refrigerator. It is used as a spice in meals. It gives lemon flavor.

Traditional Use

Lemongrass is a fragrant tropical grass, essential in Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian cooking. It is traditionally used:

  • In the kitchen: soups and broths such as Tom Yum, curries, rice, marinades for meat, fish and vegetables, smoothies and fresh drinks
  • To ease bloating and support comfortable digestion
  • To support the body's natural elimination of fluids
  • As a calming evening tea, to support relaxation and restful sleep
  • As a natural source of antioxidants
  • To freshen the breath; served iced for a refreshing summer drink
