The roots of the plant contain compounds, such as alizarin and purpurin, which produce various shades of red, from pale pink to deep burgundy.
Usage: Steep 1 teaspoon of the root in 250 ml of cold water for 8 hours. Strain, then pour 250 ml of boiling water over the same root and let it infuse for 15 minutes. Strain again. Combine the cold and hot infusions.

Madder is one of the oldest dye plants in the world; its red root has coloured textiles since ancient Egypt and was also used in Balkan folk herbalism. It is traditionally used:

- Historically, in folk herbalism to support the kidneys and urinary system
