Mullein (Verbascum thapsus), also known as great mullein or common mullein is a native biennial plant of Europe, northern Africa, and Asia. Its small, yellow flowers are densely grouped on a tall stem, which grows from a large rosette of leaves. Their seeds may persist for many years in the soil. In fact, viable mullein seed has been found that is hundreds of years old. Roman soldiers are said to have dipped the plant stalks in grease for use as torches. Other cultures use the leaves as wicks. Native Americans and American colonists lined their shoes with leaves from the plant to keep out the cold.

The dried leaves can then be used to make mullein tea. The dried leaves may also be used to make extracts, tinctures, and oils.

Using: Boil a cup of water. Next, place 1 teaspoon of dried mullein leaves in a cup and cover with boiling water. Allow steeping for 10 to 15 minutes. !! Filter the steeped mullein tea through an exceptionally fine mesh or coffee filter. In this way, the fine hairs will be removed from the tea. !!

Traditional Use

Mullein is a tall, velvety plant with golden flower spikes, one of the classic respiratory herbs of European and Native American tradition. The leaves are traditionally used:

  • To support the respiratory system and clear, comfortable breathing
  • To soothe the throat and voice in the cold season
  • To soothe the stomach and support digestive comfort
  • As a gargle for the mouth and throat

Harvest & Character

Harvested June to August at full bloom, only in dry weather. Large, soft, woolly, grey-green leaves with a mild taste. Strain the tea through a fine cloth or paper filter to remove the tiny leaf hairs.

Also known as: Great mullein, velvet plant
