Quercus Robur

Oak Bark / Quercus Robur / Oak Bark Tea / Organic Dried Herb

ORIGIN OF BULGARIA
Botanical Name: Quercus Robur
Other Names: Quercus bark, Tannin-rich bark, Quercus cortex, Oakwood bark, White oak bark, Oak tree bark

Quercus robur, the pedunculate oak, is a species of flowering plant in the beech and oak family, Fagaceae. It is a large tree, native to most of Europe and western Asia, and is widely cultivated in other temperate regions. Quercus robur is a deciduous tree up to 40 m tall, with a single stout trunk that can be as much as 11 m in girth (circumference at breast height) or even 14 m in pollarded specimens. The bark is greyish-brown and closely grooved, with vertical plates. It's important to note that oak bark tea has a strong, astringent taste due to the presence of tannins.

Usage: Add 1-2 teaspoons dried herbs to 1 glass of boiling water. Brew for 10-15 minutes. Strain.

Traditional Use

Oak bark is one of the most astringent herbs of European tradition, rich in natural tannins. It is traditionally used:

  • As a rinse and gargle to support healthy gums and a fresh mouth
  • To support digestive comfort and regularity
  • Externally, in compresses, washes and sitz baths to soothe the skin
  • In foot baths, for fresh, dry feet

Harvest & Character

Harvested in early spring, during sap flow, from young, smooth branches. Tube-shaped or flat pieces, grey-brown outside and reddish-brown inside, with a strongly astringent taste.

Please note: Mostly used externally. Not for pregnancy, children under 16, or people allergic to aspirin. Take apart from iron supplements.
