Rosa Canina

Rosehips Whole / Rosa canina / Organic Dried Fruit / Rosehips Tea / Rosehips Berries

Latin Name: Rosa canina
Plant Family: Rosacea
Other Names: Dog Rose, Brier Rose, Dog Berry, Hep Tree, Hip Fruit, Hop Fruit, Hogseed, Sweet Brier, Wild Brier, Witches Brier, Rosier Sauvage, Rosier des Haies, Rose de Chien & Swine Rose, Rose Haw, Rose Hep, Hip Berry, Rose Hip Fruit, Wild Rose Fruit, Hep Apple, Dogberry, Eglantine Fruit

The rose hip or rosehip, also called rose haw and rose hep, is the accessory fruit of the various species of rose plant. It is typically red to orange, but ranges from dark purple to black in some species.
Whole Rosehips are often used to make wine, jellies, jam, marmalade, soup, tea cordials, syrups and even supplements but our all-time fave is mixing them into potpourri blends. Rose hips are commonly used in herbal tea, often blended with hibiscus. Dried rose hips are also sold for crafts and home fragrance purposes. It has a delicate, floral flavour that’s slightly sweet with a distinct tart aftertaste.

Using: Add whole rosehips and water to a stainless steel pot. Slowly bring the mixture up to a boil, and then reduce it to a simmer. Allow the mixture to steep for 5-10 minutes. (When brewing tea with whole rosehips use about 5 hips (or 2 teaspoons, if you are using chopped hips) per cup of hot water.) Tea is very tasty and is a storehouse of vitamin C. (Be careful not to boil the hips, otherwise they will lose their high content of vitamin C.)

Traditional Use

Rosehips, the bright red fruits of the wild dog rose, are among the most loved traditional teas of the Balkans. They are traditionally used:

  • As one of nature's richest sources of vitamin C, to support the body's natural defenses, especially in autumn and winter
  • As a natural source of antioxidants, pectin, organic acids and minerals
  • For energy and vitality during the cold months
  • To support the kidneys and urinary system and the body's natural elimination of fluids
  • To support healthy blood vessels and a healthy heart
  • In homemade teas, syrups, jams and rosehip wine
