Sorbus Aucuparia

Rowan Berries / Sorbus Aucuparia / Wildcrafted Organic Whole Dried Mountain Ash / Rowan Tea / Herbal Tea / Dried Loose Herb

ORIGIN OF BULGARIA
Botanical Name: Sorbus Aucuparia
Other Names: Mountain Ash Berries, Sorbus Berries, Rowan Fruit, Wild Rowan Berries, European Rowan Berries, Witch Berries

Rowan berries, the small, bright red or orange fruits of the rowan tree (Sorbus aucuparia), are commonly found in Europe, Asia, and North America. Known for their vibrant clusters, they’re popular as ornamental trees but also have a place in culinary. Rowan berries have a tart, astringent flavor with a hint of bitterness. Drying them reduces the astringency slightly and makes them more palatable, though they remain tart and slightly bitter. Dried rowan berries can be used to make jams or jellies after rehydrating them and combining them with sugar or honey.

Using: Bring 1 cup of water to a rolling boil. Add 1-2 teaspoons of the dried rowan berries to the boiling water. Allow the berries to simmer for about 10–15 minutes. Strain.

Traditional Use

Rowan (mountain ash) is a magical tree of European folk tradition, said to protect homes; its bright red berries ripen in autumn. They are traditionally used:

  • As a natural source of vitamin C and antioxidants, to support the body's natural defenses
  • To soothe the throat in the cold season
  • To support the kidneys and urinary system and the body's natural elimination of fluids
  • To support digestion and regularity
  • In homemade jams, jellies and liqueurs

Harvest & Character

Harvested from September until the first snow, when fully ripe; frost makes them sweeter. Glossy, wrinkled, red-orange dried berries with a sour, bitter, astringent taste. Lightly crush before simmering.

Also known as: Mountain ash

Please note: Always cook the berries before use; do not eat them raw.
