Cassia Angustifolia

Senna Leaf | Cassia Angustifolia | Organic Dried Senna Leaves | Senna Tea | Senna Alexandrina

Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Cassia Angustifolia
Other Names: Cassia senna, Cassia angustifolia, Indian Senna, Tinnevelly Senna, Alexandrian Senna, True Senna, Nubian Senna, Egyptian Senna, Senna alexandrina

Senna alexandrina is an ornamental plant in the genus Senna. It is used in herbalism. It grows natively in upper Egypt, especially in the Nubian region, and near Khartoum (Sudan). It is also grown elsewhere, notably in India and Somalia. Alexandrian Senna is a shrubby plant that reaches 0.5–1 metres, rarely two metres in height with a branched, pale-green erect stem and long spreading branches bearing four or five pairs of leaves. These leaves form complex, feathery, mutual pairs. Dried senna leaf tea typically has a strong, bitter taste.

Usage: Boil 1 cup water. Place the 1-2 teaspoons dried senna leaves in a teapot or heatproof container. Pour the boiling water over the dried leaves. Cover the teapot or container and let the tea steep for about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on your desired strength.

Traditional Use

Senna (Alexandrian senna) is a desert shrub of Egypt and Sudan, one of the best-known natural laxative herbs in the world. It is traditionally used:

  • For occasional use, to support regular bowel movements; its gentle effect usually appears 8–10 hours after drinking, so it is best taken in the evening
  • To ease the feeling of heaviness and bloating after heavy meals
  • In short seasonal cleansing routines
