Origin: Bulgaria
Botonical Name: Eleutherococcus senticosus
Other Names: Eleuthero, Shigoka, Devil's shrub, Ci-wu-jia, Wu Jia Shen Jing.

Eleutherococcus senticosus is a species of small, woody shrub in the family Araliaceae native to Northeastern Asia. It may be colloquially called devil's bush, Siberian ginseng, eleuthero, ciwujia, Devil's shrub, shigoka, touch-me-not, wild pepper, or kan jang. The herb grows in mixed and coniferous mountain forests, forming low undergrowth or is found in groups in thickets and edges. Eleutherococcus senticosus is sometimes found in oak groves at the foot of cliffs, rarely in high forest riparian woodland. Roots of E. senticosus are cylindrical, up to 0.5 centimetres (0.20 in) in diameter, straight or branched, dark brown, and have a smooth surface with bark fixed closely to the xylem.

Ginseng tea originated in Korea and was made from a Korean variety of ginseng. The tea has become a popular beverage all over the world as an herbal drink. Siberian ginseng root tea is a traditional herbal that has been used for centuries in Asia to boost energy and support overall health and well-being.

Using: Brew 2 teaspoons of the herb in 500 ml of boiling water for 15 minutes.

Traditional Use

Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) is a hardy shrub of the Siberian taiga, studied in the former Soviet Union as an adaptogen for athletes and cosmonauts. The root is traditionally used:

  • For natural energy, stamina and endurance
  • To support focus and mental performance
  • To support the body's natural defenses
  • In courses of 15–20 days followed by a break of about a month; drunk in the morning and at midday, not in the evening
