Urtica Dioica

Stinging Nettle Leaf / Urtica Dioica / Nettle Leaf / Organic Nettle Leaves / Nettle Tea

Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Urtica Dioica
Other Names: Common nettle, Burn nettle, Stinging nettle, Nettle leaf, Nettle, Stinger, Big string nettle, European nettle,

Urtica dioica is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the family Urticaceae. Originally native to Europe, much of temperate Asia and western North Africa, it is now found worldwide. Urtica dioica is a dioecious, herbaceous, perennial plant, 0.9 to 2 metres tall in the summer and dying down to the ground in winter. It has widely spreading rhizomes and stolons, which are bright yellow, as are the roots. The soft, green leaves are 30 to 200 mm long and are borne oppositely on an erect, wiry, green stem. Stinging nettle is particularly found as an understory plant in wetter environments, but it is also found in meadows. It's rich in nutrients like vitamins A and C, iron, potassium, and calcium.
Dried nettle leaf can be used as a culinary ingredient in various dishes, similar to fresh nettle leaves. It can be added to soups, stews, sauces, and other recipes for its flavor and nutritional content.

Usage: Heat 1 cup water to near boiling. Avoid using boiling water directly on the nettle leaves, as it can result in a bitter taste. Place the 1-2 teaspoons dried nettle leaves in a teapot or a heatproof mug. Pour the hot water over the leaves. Cover the teapot or mug with a lid or a small plate to trap the heat and let the tea steep for about 5 to 10 minutes. Strain.

Traditional Use

Stinging nettle is one of the most nourishing wild plants of European tradition, a classic spring tonic. The leaves are traditionally used:

  • As a spring tonic, naturally rich in iron, minerals, vitamins and chlorophyll
  • To support the body's natural elimination of fluids and cleansing processes
  • To support comfortable joints
  • To support healthy blood sugar levels as part of a balanced diet
  • By women, to support comfort during the monthly cycle
  • As a hair rinse, to support strong, healthy hair and a healthy scalp
  • In soups, pies and green smoothies

Harvest & Character

Harvested May to October. Dark green, toothed, heart-shaped leaves with a mild, grassy, spinach-like taste; drying removes the sting. Keep away from light, which fades its colour.
