Urtica Dioica

Stinging Nettle Root / Urtica Dioica / Nettle Root / Organic Nettle

Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Urtica Dioica
Other Names: Common nettle, Burn nettle, Stinging nettle, Nettle root, Nettle, Stinger, Big string nettle, European nettle, Bichu

Urtica dioica is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the family Urticaceae. Originally native to Europe, much of temperate Asia and western North Africa, it is now found worldwide. Urtica dioica is a dioecious, herbaceous, perennial plant, 0.9 to 2 metres tall in the summer and dying down to the ground in winter. It has widely spreading rhizomes and stolons, which are bright yellow, as are the roots. Stinging nettle is particularly found as an understory plant in wetter environments, but it is also found in meadows. Dried nettle root tea may have a different flavor profile compared to nettle leaf tea, with potentially more earthy and woody notes.

Usage: Heat 1 cup water to near boiling. Avoid using boiling water directly on the nettle root, as it can result in a bitter taste. Place the 1-2 teaspoons nettle root in a teapot or a heatproof mug. Pour the hot water over the roots. Cover the teapot or mug with a lid or a small plate to trap the heat and let the tea steep for about 5 to 10 minutes. Strain.

Traditional Use

Stinging nettle root is valued in European herbalism especially for men. It is traditionally used:

  • To support men's wellbeing and healthy prostate function
  • To support the urinary system and the body's natural elimination of fluids
  • To support comfortable joints
  • As a rinse to support strong hair and a healthy scalp
