Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Viola Tricolor
Other Names: Johnny Jump Up, Pansy, Heart's Delight, Three-Colored Violet, Heartsease, Violet Herb
Viola tricolor is a common European wild flower, growing as an annual or short-lived perennial. It is native to Europe and Asia, but it has been introduced to other parts of the world and can often be found in gardens and wild habitats. Wild pansies typically have flowers that are purple, yellow, and white, often with characteristic 'faces' resembling those of pansies. These flowers bloom from spring to summer and are known for their delicate beauty. Viola tricolor is a small plant of creeping and ramping[a] habit, reaching at most 15 cm (6 ins) in height, with flowers about 1.5 centimetres (0.59 in) in diameter. Wild pansy tea has a mild and slightly floral flavor with subtle herbal undertones.
Usage: Heat 1 cup water to near boiling, then pour 1 tablespoon dried wild pansy it over the dried wild pansy in the teapot or mug. Let the herb steep in the hot water for about 5-10 minutes. Strain.
Traditional Use
Wild pansy (heartsease) is a cheerful three-coloured wildflower of European meadows and a traditional "cleansing" herb. It is traditionally used:
- As a cleansing herb, to support clear, healthy-looking skin
- To support the respiratory system and soothe the throat
- To support the body's natural elimination of fluids
- Externally, in washes and compresses for the skin
Harvest & Character
Harvested April to July during flowering. Dried stems, leaves and small flowers in yellow, violet and white, with a mild taste. Keep away from light, which fades its colour.
Also known as: Wild pansy, heartsease, Johnny-jump-up
