ORIGIN OF BULGARIA
Botanical Name: Juglans Regia
Other Names: Walnut husk, Walnut hull cut, Walnut green husk, Green walnut hull, Juglans regia hull
Walnut hull is the fleshy outer layer of the walnut fruit from the walnut tree (Juglans regia) before it fully ripens. The walnut tree belongs to the Juglandaceae (walnut family) and is a large, long-lived tree. Walnut hull is considered a natural source of iodine. It has also been traditionally used as a natural brown dye. The hull produces a strong brown pigment and was historically used for hair coloring and textile dyeing.
The taste of walnut hull is very bitter, astringent, and slightly sharp, mainly due to the natural compounds it contains.
Usage: Place 25 grams of walnut hull into a glass jar. Add 200 ml of 60% alcohol. Close the container tightly and leave it in a dark place for 14–20 days, shaking it occasionally.
After the infusion period is complete, strain the mixture and take 15–20 drops diluted in a glass of water.
Traditional Use
The green outer hull of the common walnut is a classic of Balkan folk tradition, used for generations in seasonal cleansing routines. It is traditionally used:
- In seasonal cleansing routines, to support a healthy gut environment and the body's natural detox processes
- As a general tonic for strength and vitality
- To support the natural flow of bile
- As a rinse and gargle for healthy gums
- In homemade tinctures, traditionally made with rakia and taken in drops
Harvest & Character
Collected in August and September from ripe walnuts while the hulls are still green. Dried hull pieces with an astringent, bitter taste; they naturally stain skin and fabric brown.
