Urtica Dioica
Wild Stinging Nettle Seeds | Urtica Dioica | Wildcrafted | Nettle Seeds | Nettle Seeds Tea
Origin: Bulgaria
Botanical Name: Urtica Dioica
Other Names: Common nettle, Burn nettle, Stinging nettle, Nettle, Stinger, Big string nettle, European nettle
Urtica dioica is a herbaceous perennial flowering plant in the family Urticaceae. Originally native to Europe, much of temperate Asia and western North Africa, it is now found worldwide. Urtica dioica is a dioecious, herbaceous, perennial plant, 0.9 to 2 metres tall in the summer and dying down to the ground in winter. The seeds develop within the small, greenish-brown seed pods that form after the plant flowers. Each seed pod contains numerous tiny seeds. While the whole plant contains vitamins (A and C) and minerals (iron, magnesium, calcium), nettle seeds are also rich in fatty acids and vitamin E. Stinging nettle seeds have a nutty flavor and can be consumed as food.
Using: Heat 1 cup water to near boiling. Place the 1-2 teaspoons nettle seeds in a teapot or a heatproof mug. Pour the hot water over the seeds. Cover the teapot or mug with a lid or a small plate to trap the heat and let the tea steep for about 5 to 10 minutes. Strain.
Traditional Use
Nettle seeds have long been gathered in Europe as a wild food. Rich in healthy fats and vitamin E, they are traditionally used:
- Sprinkled over salads, yogurt, muesli and soups for a nutty taste
- As a nourishing everyday addition for energy and vitality
- Baked into breads and crackers
- Brewed into a light, nutty tea
Harvest & Character
Wild-gathered in late summer, when the seed clusters are ripe. Small greenish-brown seeds with a mild, nutty flavour.
Please note: Use small daily amounts (1–2 teaspoons). Nettle seeds can be energising, so they are best taken earlier in the day. Not for pregnancy.
